What this Vastu compass does differently

Most phone compass apps show a needle and stop there. A Vastu reading has to answer three questions: which way is true north, which Vastu zone is this, and is the reading trustworthy. This compass answers all three on one screen.

    • True north, calculated on your phone. Phones measure magnetic north. We correct it using the same World Magnetic Model that navigation systems use, for your location.
    • Precision mode (metal-proof). Lock to the sun’s shadow (sun position computed to a few hundredths of a degree) or to a wall measured on the map. The gyroscope then carries the true heading indoors, unaffected by steel and wiring, with a live ± estimate.
    • Interference detector. We compare the magnetometer with the gyroscope in real time. If metal is bending the magnetic reading, you see it — and by how many degrees.
    • A stability badge. We watch how much the reading wobbles. If it is unstable or your iPhone reports low accuracy, we tell you to calibrate or move away from metal, instead of showing a confident wrong number.
    • Vastu zones on the dial. Switch between the 16 zones (22.5° each) and the 32 entrance padas used for main-door placement.
    • Facing checks. Pick what you are measuring — house facing, sleeping direction, desk, stove or prayer — and get an instant rating with the reason.
    • From reading to report. Save readings as rooms and open them in the Vastu Checker for a transparent score and practical fixes.

How to use the online Vastu compass

    1. Open on your phone. Open this page on a phone with a compass sensor (almost all Android phones and iPhones). Desktops usually have no compass sensor.
    2. Start the compass. Tap “Start compass”. On iPhone, allow Motion & Orientation access. Hold the phone flat, screen facing up, away from metal and appliances.
    3. Check the stability badge. Wait until the badge says “Stable”. If it says unstable or needs calibration, move the phone in a figure-of-eight a few times and step away from steel almirahs, fridges and wiring.
    4. Measure what you need. For house facing, stand in the main doorway facing outward. For a room’s direction, stand at the centre of the home and point the top of the phone at the room.
    5. Save and check. Tap “Save reading” and choose what you measured. Your readings flow straight into the Vastu Checker for a scored, room-by-room report.

    Magnetic north vs true north

A compass needle points to the magnetic north pole, which drifts every year and sits hundreds of kilometres from the geographic pole. The angle between them — magnetic declination — depends on where you are. Across most of India it is under 2°, small enough not to change a Vastu zone in most cases. In New York it is about 12–13° west, enough to shift a room into the neighbouring 16-zone sector. That is why we default to true north and always show you the correction we applied.

    Frequently asked questions

Is an online Vastu compass accurate?

A normal phone compass is only as good as its magnetometer and the room you stand in: research finds typical errors of several degrees, and 20° or more near steel, rebar and appliances. That is why this compass has a Precision mode: lock it once to the sun’s shadow or a wall measured on the map, and the phone’s gyroscope carries that true heading through your home — metal cannot bend it. In our tests it held within a few degrees where the magnetic reading was off by more than 20°. It also shows a live interference warning and an estimated ± for every reading. No phone compass can honestly promise “100%”; we show you how accurate each reading is instead.

Should I use true north or magnetic north for Vastu?

Vastu directions refer to the geographic (true) directions defined by the sun’s path, so we show true north by default. The difference is called magnetic declination. In most of India it is small (about 0–2°), but in parts of the US, Canada or Australia it can be 10–15°. We calculate it on your device with the official World Magnetic Model (WMM2025). You can switch to magnetic north at any time.

Why does the compass not work on my laptop?

Most laptops and desktops have no magnetometer, so no website can measure direction on them — any site that shows a moving needle on a laptop is guessing. On a computer, use the Map Direction Finder to measure your building’s facing from a map, or enter a bearing manually.

How do I calibrate my phone compass?

Move the phone slowly in a figure-of-eight 3–4 times while rotating it through all orientations. Remove magnetic phone cases and stay at least an arm’s length from steel furniture, speakers and appliances. On Android, Google Maps’ blue-dot “Calibrate” screen also helps. On iPhone, keep Settings → Privacy → Location Services → System Services → Compass Calibration enabled.

How do I find the facing direction of my house or flat?

Stand inside the main door, face outward (the way you walk out), hold the phone flat with its top pointing out of the door, and read the direction. Choose the “House / door facing” check to see the Vastu rating. For a flat, use your flat’s own main door, not the building gate.

What are the 16 Vastu zones?

The 360° around the centre of a home is divided into 16 zones of 22.5° each: N, NNE, NE, ENE, E, ESE, SE, SSE, S, SSW, SW, WSW, W, WNW, NW and NNW. Each has traditional associations. See the full Vastu direction chart with degrees.

Do you store my location or readings?

No. The compass, declination maths and your saved readings all stay in your browser. We never receive your location or readings. Read the privacy policy.

Can this replace a Vastu consultant?

No. It gives you accurate directions and the placements most commonly cited in mainstream Vastu texts, so you can understand your home and ask better questions. Schools of Vastu differ, and important decisions (especially structural changes) deserve a qualified professional.
